Troyan monastery

The Troyan Monastery Holy Mother’s Assumption is built on the bank of Cherni Osam River, 10 km away from Troyan. It has probably been founded in the late 16th century and is currently the third largest monastery in the country. 

Thanks to the courageous men that had run the monastery, it is not only preserved through the centuries but more and more new buildings have been attached to it. The living quarters are in the typical Bulgarian revival style.

During the late 40s of the 19th century, Zahariy Zograf draws the inner and outer northern wall of the church. The mural paintings of this legendary craftsman have been preserved and everybody can enjoy their beauty. A couple of years later a five-storey monastery tower with a bell is erected. Some parts of it had been destroyed, but were later on rebuilt.
